Suffering from migraines, clenching and grinding your teeth or facial and neck pains?
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder occurs when there is a derangement of the normal functioning of the Temporomandibular joint. Repetitive behaviors such as teeth grinding or clenching, gum chewing, fingernail or lip and cheek biting, and stress lead to enlargement of the head and neck muscles. This disfunction results in significant pain and impairment for many individuals.
- grinding and/or clenching
- chronic headaches
- facial pain
- damage to the teeth!
Traditional treatment of TMJ disorder include the use of bite guards, wisdom teeth extractions and full mouth reconstructions. These treatment have limited success. On the other hand, Botox® and trigger point injections in head and neck muscles are very effective treatments for TMJ Syndrome, headaches and facial pain.
If Dr Timin determines you are a candidate for therapeutic Botox® treatment, your specific diagnosis and the severity of your condition will determine how much Botox® you will require. Botox® gets injected into affected head and neck muscles, blocks the signals that cause muscle movements, essentially relaxing the muscle and reducing or eliminating facial pain and bruxism.
Botox® injection will only take few minutes and will last from 3-6months. Patients will begin to see the results after 5-10 days. With a series of treatments, Botox® can retain your muscles to relax and you will notice your symptoms resolve for longer periods of time and many patients can even loose the habit of clenching and grinding.
In addition, you will also notice facial aesthetics will improve. Facial wrinkles will disappear and jaws will slim down following the treatment.
Dr. Timin is one of very few dentists trained in therapeutic Botox® treatments. She will help you feel great and look great all in the same treatment.
